A Birthday Celebration for a School

One hundred and ten years ago a rangatira named ‘Iraia Kuao’ fought for his land and school that was still being established here in Tautoro

Iraia Kuao died before seeing what had happen to his plan, to build a better future for his kids which was a school. when he died, his son Mara Kuao accomplish his plan there was time were it got hard for him because the English keep trying to destroy his school but he kept on fighting because he did not want his vision to disappear with a blink of an eye

Years went past and his school became a success. Now it is the 20th century and this amazing school is still standing. On the 10th of June 2016 they had the best day ever when they celebrated the school’s birthday and it has turned 110 years old.

There was a powhiri to welcome the kaumatua and kuia and our whanau which started the day off with lots of learning, what things were like in 1906. Which was hard. They had to dress up like the 1906 which they found fun. Then in their rooms were rows of six. As the children sat in their rows, they were learning how to write like the 1906, cursive writing which made it even worse.

Then to end it off with a performance from the tamariki of Tautoro School. It was amazing to see everyone from the whanau join in to help them sing even louder and it was extremely astounding to see the kaumatua joining in on the haka.

It was time to do activities like they did in 1906 like hula hoop and knuckle bone marbles  and a lot of other things and to finish it off with a hangi. It was beautiful and a birthday cake which looked amazing. What a amazing way to end the week.
